Chapter 13 Flashcards
What is the point of the famous story of the 47 Ronin?
To display honourable and loyal behaviour.
What were the years of the Edo or Tokugawa period of Japan?
Where did this period get these two names?
1600-1868, and the period received two names because their capital city was previously called Edo and there were rulers called Tokugawa.
How did Shogun Ieyasu and his successors control the daimyo?
- Alternate attendance (forced to pay for two homes instead of one, living in one house one year and the other the next)
- Sharing power (Shogunate - federal, Daimyo - local)
- Strict laws (Forced Daimyo to pay for roads and projects along with restricting how they dressed)
Name the seven levels of Japanese Feudal Society.
Emperor → Shogun → Daimyo → Samurai → Artisans → Peasants and Merchants
Give an example of the strict rules governing society in Japan.
Depending on your status, laws dictated who you bowed to and how low you had to bow. If you did not bow to the right people or to the right height, you would be severely punished.
What could the Samurai do and not do?
Could: Have swords (curved, large, sharp/Small, for severing heads), lowest level was Ronin (samurai without masters).
Could not: Be involved with trade & business, live simple and thrifty lives.
(Japan) Describe the life of a peasant.
To farm and provide for the country. Even though they were valued, their whole lives were regulated by strict rules that disallowed them from smoking tobacco, drinking rice wine, and leaving their district without explicit permission. They were worked ruthlessly, and there is even a quote in the textbook that said “the more you squeeze them, the more oil you get out of them.”
What was the relationship between Confucianism and maintaining the above class distinctions?
Modest work, study hard. What you do not want done to you you do not do to others. Good moral beliefs. Everyone has a place in society, and everyone should work at it. If everyone accepted their duties and obligations, there would be peace and order. If not there would be chaos and suffering.
Who were the “Southern Barbarians”? How did they get that name?
The Southern barbarians were Portuguese traders who got stranded on the island. They got the name as they showed up from the south,
What similarities and differences did the Christian missionaries have with the
Japanese?
They both had ethical codes, but the Christians believed there was only one god while the Japanese believed there were multiple.
