Chapter 5 Flashcards
Work of respiratory system can be divided into four parts (4)
- Ventilation
- Distribution
- Diffusion
- Perfusion
What are the four primary functions of the respiratory system
- Oxygen-carbon dioxide exchange
- Regulation of acid-base balance
- Body temperature regulation
- Voice production
Describe the function of the three basic defense mechanisms of the respiratory system
- Nasal cavity
- Protective reflexes
- Mucociliary clearance
Passageways include (7)
1 Nostrils
2 Nasal cavity
3 Pharynx
4 Larynx
5 Trachea
6 Bronchi
7 Bronchioles
Work of respiratory system can be divided into four parts
1 Ventilation
2 Distribution
3 Diffusion
4 Perfusion
Nasal Cavity
Turbinates of the nasal cavity provide a large surface area for warming and humidifying inspired air. Hair also helps to filter out larger particulate matter.
Protective reflexes
Cough, sneeze, and maybe reverse sneeze respond to stimulation of receptors on the surface of air passageways to forcefully expel foreign material. Laryngospasm and bronchospasm help prevent introduction of foreign material into the lung tissue
Mucociliary Clearance
Layer of mucus secreted onto the surface of the epithelial lining of the respiratory tract helps to trap foreign debris that enter the respiratory passages.
What are the three important principles of respiratory therapeutics
- Control of secretions
- Control of reflexes
- Maintenance of normal airflow
