Ch 9 Hormones Flashcards
Hormones Generally, are administered to animals for one of two reasons
- To correct a deficiency of that hormone
- To obtain a desired effect (e.g., to postpone uterus)
Endogenous hormones
Hormones that are produced naturally in the body
Exogenous hormones
Hormones that are administered to an animal
Pituitary Gland (2)
- Master gland of endocrine system
- Located at base of brain
Two hormones of the posterior pituitary
Vasopressin (ADH)
Oxytocin
Neurohormonal reflex:
Applies to release of oxytocin by posterior pituitary
Positive feedback
Low plasma levels of a hormone are sensed by the hypothalamus, and release of appropriate release factor increases
Negative feedback
High plasma levels of a hormone are sensed by the hypothalamus, which then reduces the amount of appropriate releasing factor
Stages of the Reproductive System
Proestrus
◦ Estrus
◦ Diestrus
◦ Anestrus
FSH causes growth and
maturation of a follicle
LH release causes ovulation of the mature follicle; formation of
corpus luteum
