Chapter 49 - HAZMAT Flashcards
An organization, office, or person responsible for enforcing the requirements of a code or standard, or for approving equipment, materials, an installation, or a procedure.
Authority having jurisdiction
A chemical asphyxiant that results in a cellular respiratory failure; this gas ties up hemoglobin to the extent that oxygen in the blood becomes inaccessible to the cells.
Carbon Monoxide
A glass, plastic, or steel nonbulk storage container, ranging in volume from 5 to 15 gallons (19 to 600 L).
Carboy
Bulk packaging that is permanently attached to or forms a part of a motor vehicle, or is not permanently attached to any motor vehicle, and that, because of its size, construction, or attachment to a motor vehicle, is loaded or unloaded without being removed from the motor vehicle.
Cargo tank
An agent that affects the body’s ability to use oxygen. It is a colorless gas that has an odor similar to almonds; exposure can occur from by-products of combustion at structure fires. The effects begin on the cellular level and are very rapidly seen at the organ system level.
Cyanide
A portable, nonbulk, compressed gas container used to hold liquids and gases. Uninsulated compressed gas containers of this sort are used to store substances such as nitrogen, argon, helium, and oxygen. They have a range of sizes and internal pressures.
Cylinder
A type of decontamination in which as much clothing and equipment as possible is disposed of to reduce the magnitude of the problem.
Disposal
The principle that the longer a hazardous material is in contact with the body or the greater the concentration, the greater the effect will most likely be.
Dose effect
A bulk container that serves as both a shipping and a storage vessel. Such tanks hold between 5,000 and 6,000 gallons (18,900 to 22,700 L) of product and can be pressurized or non-pressurized. Intermodal tanks may be shipped by all modes of transportation.
Intermodal tank
A type of signage at least 3.9 inches (9.9 cm) on each side that is often required on all four sides of individual packages and boxes that are being transported.
Label
The amount (lethal dose) of an agent or substance that will kill 50% of people who are exposed to this level.
LD50
Any container other than a bulk storage container, such as drums, bags, compressed gas cylinders, and cryogenic containers; these hold commonly used commercial and industrial chemicals such as solvents, cleaners, and compounds.
Nonbulk storage vessel
A type of signage at least 10.8 inches (27 cm) on each side that is often required to be on all four sides of transport vehicles identifying the hazardous contents of the vehicle.
Placard
A multistep process of carefully scrubbing and washing contaminants from a person or object, collecting runoff water, and collecting and properly handling all items.
Technical decontamination
The concentration of a substance that is supposed to be safe for exposure no more than 8 hours per day and 40 hours per week.
Threshold limit value
