Chapter 25 - Flashcards
White blood cells that contain histamine granules and other substances that are released during inflammatory and allergic responses.
basophils
Chemicals that work to cause the immune or allergic response; for example, histamine.
chemical mediators
A chemical found in mast cells that, when released, causes vasodilation, capillary leaking, and bronchiole constriction; found in large amounts in basophils; increases tissue inflammation.
histamine
Basophil cells located in connective tissues to which antibodies, formed in response to allergens, attach, bursting the cells and releasing chemical mediators in response to an antigen-antibody reaction.
mast cells
The first encounter with the foreign substance to begin the immune response.
primary response
Itching
pruritus
An autoimmune connective tissue disease that causes fibrotic (scar tissue–like) changes to the skin, blood vessels, muscles, and internal organs.
scleroderma
The ability to recognize a foreign substance the next time it is encountered.
sensitivity
A multisystem autoimmune disease.
systemic lupus erythematosus
