Chapter 42- Antifungal Drugs Flashcards
Antimetabolite
A drug or other substance that either is a receptor antagonist or resembles a normal human metabolite and interferes with the metabolite’s function in the body, usually by competing for the metabolite’s usual receptors or enzymes
Dermatophyte
One of several fungi, often found in soil, that infect skin, nails, or hair of humans
Ergosterol
An unsaturated hydrocarbon of the Vit D group isolated from yeast, mushrooms, ergot, and other fungi; main sterol in fungal membranes
Fungi
A large, diverse group of eukaryotic MO that require an external carbon source and form a plant structure know was a thallus. Fungi consist of yeasts and moulds
Moulds
Multicellular fungi characterized by long, branching filaments called hyphae, which entwine to form a complex branched structure know as a mycelium
Mycosis
The general term for any fungal infection
Pathological fungi
Fungi that causes mycoses
S
Sterol
The substance in the cell membranes of the fungi to which polyene anti fungal drugs bind
Yeasts
Single-celled fungi that reproduce by budding.
