chapter 40 Flashcards
what is a tissue?
Tissues are groups of cells that have a similar structure and act together to perform a specific function.
describe the 4 tissue types
- epithelial
- connective
- muscle
4.nervous
how is epithelial tissue described?
Epithelial tissues are thin tissues that cover all the exposed surfaces of the body.
where is each type found?
- simple squamous: found in the lining of blood vessels, air sacs of the lungs, and the inner lining of the heart
- stratified squamous: found in the outer layer of the skin, lining of the mouth, esophagus and vagina
- simple cuboidal: found in the kidney tubules, small glands, and the surface of the ovaries
- simple columnar: found in the lining of the digestive tract, including the stomach and intestines
- pseudostratified columnar: found in the respiratory tract, like the lining of the trachea and bronchi
what are the Charteristics and functions of connective tissue?
1) binding and supporting
2) protecting
3) insulating
4) storing reserve fuel
5) transporting substances within the body
how are skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscle different?
Skeletal muscles are attached to bones and perform voluntary movements of the body.
Smooth muscles are found in the walls of blood vessels and internal organs and perform involuntary movements of the body functions.
Cardiac muscles are found only in the heart and perform involuntary contractions that help the heart pump blood.
where is each muscle type found ?
Skeletal: As part of the musculoskeletal system, these muscles work with your bones, tendons and ligaments. Tendons attach skeletal muscles to bones all over your body
Cardiac: These muscles line the heart walls. They help your heart pump blood that travels through your cardiovascular system.
Smooth: These muscles line the insides of organs such as the bladder, stomach and intestines.
how is it controlled (voluntary or involuntary)?
skeletal muscles are voluntary and help with movement
smooth muscles are involuntary and found in organs for internal processes
cardiac muscles are involuntary and found in the heart for pumping blood
what is the functions of nervous tissue?
it sends signal to the bodies (signaling)
Coordinating and controlling many body activities.
Stimulating muscle contraction.
Creating an awareness of the environment.
Playing a major role in emotions, memory, and reasoning.
Transmitting and processing electrical signals, allowing for communication and coordination within the body.
what are the two cell types ?
Nervous tissue is composed of two types of cells, neurons and glial cells
define organ and give an example
An organ is a self-contained group of tissues that performs a specific function in the body.
The heart, liver, and stomach are examples of organs in humans.
define organ system and give an example
An organ system is a group of organs working together to perform one or more functions in the living organism
example of organ system are Skeletal system, Circulatory system, Digestive system, Respiratory system, Nervous system
