Chapter 4 - Sensation & Perception Flashcards
What is sensation?
Detection of physical energy by the sense organs
What is perception?
The brain’s interpretation of raw sensory data
What is Psychophysics
Study of how we perceive sensory stimuli based on their physical charateristics
What is the absolute threshold?
Lowest level of a stimulus we can detect 50% of the time
What is Weber’s law?
The stronger the stimulus, the greater the change needed to detect
What is signal detection theory?
Regards how stimuli are detected under different conditions
What is synesthesia?
Condition where a sense impression relating to a sense/part of body by stimulation of another sense/part of body
What is the Mcgurk effect?
Miss combine what we see and what we hear
What is selective attention?
Allows us to choose which sensory inputs to focus on and which to “turn down”
What is inattentional blindness?
Failure to perceive an unexpected stimulus in plain sight
What is change blindness?
Failure to detect changes in our environment
