Chapter 3 - Biological Psychology Flashcards
what are the brain mapping methods?
Phrenology, neuropsychology, EEG, CT/MRI, Petscan/fMRI, magnetoecephalography, DBS, TMS
What is the cell body?
Center of neuron
what are dendrites?
They receive information from other neurons
What are axons?
highway of information
What is the Myelin sheath?
Insulator for the axon
What is an Axon Terminal?
End of the axon containing synaptic vesicles
What are Neurotransmitters?
Messengers that allow neuron to neuron coms
What is a synapse?
Space between Neurons
What are Glial cells?
help supply nourishment, found throughout body
What are Astrocytes?
Increase reliability of neuronal transmissions
What are Oliodendrocytes?
Produces the myelin sheath
How do coms in neurotransmission work?
Coms inside neuron is electrical but coms between neurons is chemical
What are the types of neurotransmitters?
Glutamate, GABA, acetycholine, monamines, neuropeptides, amandamides
What is the cerebral cortex?
Majority of the forebrain, is divided into 4 lobes, temporal, frontal, occipital and perietal
What does the frontal lobe do?
Assists in motor function, language and memory
