Chapter 4 Periodontal disease Flashcards
Define necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis
Associated with bacteria: fusobacterium nucleatum, prevotella intermedia, porphyromonas gingivalis, tremponema spp. and selenomonas spp.
Trench mouth
Blutted/puched out papilla
Gray pseudomembrane
What is this?
Plasma cell gingivitis
Hypersensitivity to cinnamon aldehyde (big red gum)
What is this?
Localized juvenile spongiotic gingival hyperplasia
Wright’s lesion
Most are under 20 yo w/ median age of 12 yo
Define desquamative gingivitis
gingival epithelium that spontaneously sloughs or can be removed with minor manipulation
What is the differntial diagnosis for desquamative gingivitis? (5)
Lichen Planus
Mucous membrane pemphigoid
Pemphigus vulgaris
Systemic lupus erythematosis
Hypersensitivity
What is this?
Drug related gingival hyperplasia
Caused by: cyclosporine (transplant therapy)(25%), phenytoin (anticonvulsant) (50%), Nifedipine (Na channel blocker) (25%)
What is this?
Gingival fibromatosis
Slowly progressive gingival enlargement caused by a collagenous overgrowth of the gingival fibrous connective tissue
Familial or idiopathic
What is this?
Pericoronitis
Inflammatory process that arises within the tissues, surrounding the crown of a partially erupted tooth
Operculum is when there is gingival tissue that sits on the occlusal surface
Define Papillon-Lefevre Syndrome
Autosomal recessive
Mutation in cathepsin C
Accelerated periodontitis (defect in neutrophil function)
Teeth floating in air
Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans
Palmar plantar keratotis
