Chapter 4 Muscle Diagnostic Therapeutic and Pharmacology Flashcards
Creatine Kinase
Muscle enzyme found in skeletal muscle and cardiac muscle; blood levels become elevated in disorders such as heart attack, muscular dystrophy, and other skeletal muscle pathologies; also known as creatine phosphokinase (CPK)
Deep Tendon Reflexes
Muscle contraction in response to a stretch caused by striking muscle tendon with a reflex hammer; test used to determine if muscles are responding properly
Electromyogram
Hardcopy record produced by electromyography
Electromyography
Study and record of strength and quality of muscle contractions as a result of electrical stimulation
Muscle Biopsy
Removal of muscle tissue for pathological examination
Activities of Daily Living
Activities usually performed during a normal day, such as eating, dressing, and washing
Cryotherapy
Use of cold in a treatment
Gait Training
Assisting patient to learn to walk again or how to use assistive device (such as crutches or walker) to walk
Hydrotherapy
Application of warm water as a treatment; can be done in baths, swimming pools, and whirlpools
Massage
Kneading or applying pressure by hands to part of body to promote muscle relaxation and reduce tension
Mobilization
Treatments such as exercise, massage, and physical manipulation to restore movement to joints and soft tissue
Passive Range of Motion
Putting a joint through available range of motion without assistance from patient
Phonophoresis
Use of ultrasound waves to introduce medication across skin and into subcutaneous tissues
Rehabilitation
Process of treatment and exercise that can help person with disability attain maximum function and well-being
Therapeutic Exercise
Exercise planned and carried out to achieve specific physical benefit, such as improved range of motion, muscle strengthening, or cardiovascular function
