Who were microscopes invented by, and when did he invent it?
Robert Hooke, in 1665.
What were the magnification and resolution capabilities of Hooke’s microscopes?
Magnification: x30
Resolution: about 0.002mm
Who made better quality, single-lens microscopes, and when?
Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek, in 1675.
What were the capabilities of Van Leeuwenhoek’s microscopes?
Magnification: x270
Resolution: 0.0014mm
What are the capabilities of modern day electron microscopes?
Magnification: x2,000,000
Resolution: 0.000 000 2 mm

What steps would you take to view an object with a microscope?
- Wear eye protection
- Collect samples
- Add a drop of water or stain to the middle of the slide.
- Place a sample on top of the liquid.
- Using a toothpick, slowly and carefully lower a cover slip over the sample at an angle so as to avoid creating air bubbles.
- Examine the sample beginning at the lowest possible magnification to locate the object.
- Air bubbles show up as thick, black outlines.
Which dyes are used to stain cells when observing objects through a microscope?
Animal cells: methylene blue
Pant cells: Iodine
- Name the different units of measurements.
2. Convert 100mm into the above units of measurement.
- mm, micrometres, nanometres, picometres.
2. 100mm = 100,000um = 100,000,000nm = 100,000,000,000pm
When we’re electron microscopes invented?
In the 1930s.
