Q

What is Linnaean classification?

A

The classification system devised by Carl Linnaeus in 1735. It grouped organisms based upon similarities in physical characteristics. Initially there were only two major groups: plants and animals.

9
Q

What is the binomial system?

A

Each species is made up of two names. E.g. Homo sapiens. The genus has a capital letter, and the species has a lowercase letter.

Q

What is the 3 domain system?

A

The new replacement of the current 5 kingdom model. It was devised to address the vast differences between prokaryotes.

14
Q

What evidence is there to support the theory of evolution?

A

Fossils of animals that no longer exist
Many fossils were similar to, but different than, existing animals
Geologists worked out that many rocks were millions of years old
Human remains were only present in recent layers fo rock, not ancient ones
Humans had produced new animal breeds and plant varieties through selective breeding.

16
Q

Which two people worked out the theory of evolution?

A

Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace

17
Q

What was Charles Darwin’s book on evolution called, and when was in published?

A

The Origin of Species, published in 1859.

18
Q

What are the steps of natural selection?

A

Variation: (between individuals, due to different alleles)
Competition: (for food, shelter, mates, nesting sites, etc)
Differential survival: (taller, faster, stronger, etc)
Inheritance: better traits of survivors passed on to offspring
Adaptation: when most have the better characteristics, the species has adapted.

19
Q

What is speciation?

A

The evolution of a new species.

20
Q

How can speciation happen?

A

If a population becomes geographically separated

21
Q

What examples of speciation have been observable to us?

A

Warfarin resistance in rats, and antibiotic resistance in MRSA.

22
Q

Why wasn’t Darwin’s theory first accepted by other scientists?

A

Because there wasn’t a clear idea of the mechanism by which evolution functioned. Specifically, they could not account for how variations could be passed on through generations.

23
Q

How is the pentadactyl limb evidence of evolution?

A

Many different species have the same arm structure of 1-2-5, in terms of bone configuration. This, despite the fact that they were supposedly ‘designed’ for very different purposes.

24
Q

Why did scientists the universally accept Darwin[‘s theory?

A

Because they understood the principles of genetic inheritance.

25
Q

With which animal did humans share a common ancestor, 5 million years ago?

A

Chimpanzees.

26
Q

What are the two most compelling pieces of evidence to support human evolution?

A

Fossils and stone tools.

27
Q

Name the 5 stages of human evolution.

A
Ardi - Ardipithecus ramidus
Lucy - Australopithecus afarensis
Handy man - Homo habilis
Homo erectus
Homo sapien
28
Q

What were the characteristics of ‘Ardi’?

A

Existed 4.4 million years ago
The ability to walk upright, but
Long arms suitable for tree climbing and…
Big toes pointing outwards, also suitable for tree climbing, and…
A small brain size, similar to modern chimpanzees

29
Q

What were the characteristics of ‘Lucy’?

A

Existed 3.2 million years ago
Differences in the pelvis and feet making it more suitable for walking than climbing, but…
Still relatively long arms
A larger brain size, but still similar to chimpanzees

30
Q

What were the characteristics of Handy man/Homo habilis?

A

Existed 1.4 million years ago
Taller and completely upright in stance
Larger brain than a chimpanzee
Primitive stone tools are often found with these fossils (ergo: handy man)

31
Q

What were the characteristics of Homo erectus?

A

Existed 0.5 million years ago
Human body proportions, but more muscular
Much larger brain than Homo habilis
Much more sophisticated tools are found with these fossils

32
Q

How old are the earliest stone tools we have discovered?

A

3.3 million years old
