Chapter 4 Epithelial Tissues Flashcards
Characteristics of epithelial tissues
- Closely packed cells
- Basal( bottom) surface sits on glycoproteins gel
- desmosome junctions snap the cells together tight junction are like zip lock bags that prevent fluid from going between cells
- Avascular. Diffusion allows cells to their nutrition
- ET always sits on another tissue (or are superficial)
All cells are surround by what?
This keeps them alive
Salt watery fluid
Skin cells don’t have what ( invaginations or hair like structure)
Microvilli or cilia
Microvilli is in the intestines and cilia in the lobbing of the trachea
Where are epithelial tissues found?
The can cover hollow organs like the intestine or the can line the inside of hollow organs
They cover the body
Some form sweat glands and oil glands or other glands to release sweat milk or hormones
Simple means what
One layer of epithelial tissue
Stratified means?
Multiple layers of of cells that form the tissue
The apical is the top layer and basal is the bottom
Squamous
Shaped like a coin. Wider than it is longer and looks squashed
Cuboidal cells
Not exactly a cube but more or less
Columnar
More tall than wide
Transitional cells
Don’t fit into one category
