Chapter 4 - Cells Pt 2 Flashcards
What are the membranes in a eukaryotic cell part of?
The endomembrane system
What are the parts of the endomembrane system?
Nuclear envelope, ER, Golgi Apparatus, Lysosomes, vacuoles, and the plasma membrane
What are the two types of ER?
Smooth (lacks ribosomes) and Rough (lines the outside of membranes)
What is the function of smooth ER?
Produce enzymes that synthesize lipids, oils, phospholipids, and steroids
What is the function of Rough ER?
Sends proteins and sugars to the golgi apparatus
What is the Golgi apparatus’s function?
To serve as a molecular warehouse and finishing factory for products manufactured by the ER
What is the lysosome’s function?
Contains digestive enzymes that are transferred to the Golgi for processing. Create the acids that our stomach use to digest food, and are isolated.
What is the function of the vacuoles?
In plants, the function of vacuoles may involve digestive functions, contain pigments, or contain poisons to protect the plant
What two organelles help provide energy for the cell?
Chloroplasts and Mitochondria
Where are chloroplasts found?
In all plant cells and the cells of some algae
The organelle that carries out cellular respiration in eukaryotic cells is called
Mitochondria
What process converts chemical energy in foods to chemical energy in ATP?
Cellular respiration
The photosynthesizing organelles of all photosynthesizing eukaryotes are called
Chloroplasts
The three main types of fibers in the cytoskeleton
Microtubules, Microfilaments, and intermediate filaments
What are the thickets fibers of the cytoskeleton that also aid in movement?
Microtubules
