Chapter 1 - Introduction To Biology Pt 2 Flashcards
The three domains that organize the diversity of life
Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukarya
The most diverse and widespread prokaryotes
Bacteria
Prokaryotes that often live in Earth’s extreme environments
Archaea
Contain Eukaryotic cells and include single celled protists + multicellular fungi, animals and plants
Eukarya
What word is used to describe a thing that enjoys high temoperatures,
Thermophiles
Ecosystems are made up of:
producers, consumers, and decomposers
Recyclers, changing complex matter into simpler mineral nutrients
Decomposers
Eat plants and other animals
Consumers
Provide energy to the other members of the ecosystem
Producers
The two major processes of ecosystems:
- The recycling of chemical nutrients from the atmosphere and soil through producers, decomposers, and consumers, back to the environment
- The one way flow of energy through an ecosystem, entering as sunlight, converted to chemical energy by produces, passed on to consumers, and exiting as heat
What is DNA composed of?
Genes
What is DNA’s shape called?
Double Helix
What creates the diversity of life?
DNA sequences
Inheritance
Passing of DNA from generation to generation
Movement
Constitutes part of the behavior of an organism
