Chapter 4 & 5 - critical thinking Flashcards
Should builders be allowed to build near rivers, other bodies of water or parks? Why? Why not?
what could happen to those habitats when humans build near water?
Compare and contrast a renewable resource (ie: sunlight) with a non-renewable resource (ie: oil).
they similar - both are resources that an ecosystem needs to survive
they different - nonrenewable, once it’s all used up it’s gone forever
What would happen to an ecosystem if its climate changed?
if climate changed, it can affect the
How can pollution affect an ecosystem?
give a couple of examples
how would it affect the plants? animals? humans?
Why is sunlight important to animals that eat other animals?
because animals that eat other animals, eat plants and those plants need sunlight
How are producers and consumers alike and different?
they are alike because they both need energy
they are different because PRODUCERS make their own food and CONSUMERS need to get their own food
How are herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores the same and different?
they are the same - all consumers - they get their energy by eating other living things and cannot make their own food.
they are different - herbivores only eat plants; carnivores eat only other consumers; omnivores eat both plants and other consumers
Explain the role of a decomposer in nature?
it feeds on waste and dead animals and plants; decomposers break down waste into nutrients that become part of the soil; without decomposers the Earth would be covered with dead animals and plants.
How do living things get energy?
Producers get energy from the sun
Consumers get energy by eating plants or by eating animals that have eaten plants
What is a Food Chain?
A food chain just shows who eats who
What is a Food Web?
food chains that overlap
What is an Energy Pyramid?
energy transfer
