subjective empathy
Able to temporarily identify with a client and imagine and experience what it is like to be in their shoes
objective empathy
from what a counselor has learned including own experience, theories, and research findings
interpersonal empathy
ability to get inside a client’s frame of reference and understand what he/she is thinking and feeling together with the ability to communicate this understanding without prejudice to the client.

perceptiveness, know-how, and assertiveness
Perceptiveness
the ability to accurately infer the specific content of another person’s thoughts and feelings
Know-How
The ability to translate your perceptions and understanding into words
Assertiveness
The helper’s ability to bring their perceptions and understandings into the conversation

- agreement and sympathy
