APTA’s definition of a PTA
“A technically educated health care provider who assists the PT in the provision of physical therapy.”
3 levels of supervision defined from APTA
1) General supervision
2) Direct supervision
3) Direct personal supervision
General supervision
Care provided by the PTA that requires that the PT to be available for supervision by telecommunications at all times.
Direct supervision
-Requires that the PT be physically present and immediately available to supervise the PTA.
-PT also has contact with patient.
Direct personal supervision
The PT is continuously directing and supervising all the care provided to the patient.
Who dictates the requirements for supervision?
-State statues and insurance provider requirements
what does the APTA Minimum Required Skills of the PTA graduate at Entry-level describe?
Describes specific skills that can be delegated to the PTA
Tasks of a PTA
-therapeutic massages
-therapeutic exercise
-patient/caregiver/family education
-therapeutic modalities (hot packs, ultrasound, etc.)
What can PTAs not do?
-Change or develop POC
-Cannot write discharge plan or summary
-Cannot perform joint mobilization techniques or sharp debridement wound therapy (unless allowed by PT).
what 5 elements of the patient/client management model are only for the PTs?
1) examination

3) diagnosis
4)prognosis
5) interventions (although the PT may ask PTA to assist with this).
What does the PT have to consider before letting the PTA assist the interventions?
- PTAs education and experience
-patient/client stability
-predictability of consequences
-type of setting
-liability and risk management
-federal and state statues
-frequency of reexamination
-mission of of services of specific setting
Decision making algorithm
-developed by APTA to help PTAs develop clinical reasoning skills
Difference between licensure of PT and PTAs in regard to states.
PTs are licensed providers in all states and PTAs are licensed providers in majority of states.
