Chapter 4 Flashcards
Microbial Growth (O2)
Microbes that can live in the presence of O2 but don’t use it. “Propionibacterium shermonii” is an example (food bacterium)
Aerotolerant
Requires higher CO2 concentrations than the normal atmosphere (.03%)
Capnophile
Requires a small amount of O2 (only 5-10%). Higher concentrations are inhibitory.
Microaerophilic
Best grown if O2 is present, but will go without it. E. coli is an example (an intestinal bacterium)
Facultative anaerobe
Obligate anaerobe example (found in swamps)
Methanogens
Bacteria that grow within -5-30C, often found in the Arctic
Psychrophiles
Bacteria that grow within 20-30C, involved with food spoilage
Psychrotrophs
Bacteria that grow within 25-45C, often causing human diseases (human temp is at 37C)
Mesophiles
Bacteria found in compost heaps and hot springs, temps ranging from 45-70C
Thermophiles
E. coli is which type of temperature growth bacteria? (grows in the human body temp)
mesophiles
Toxic forms of oxygen need to be neutralized by enzymes known as__________. All bacteria that live in an oxygen environment have this.
Superoxide dismutase (SOD)
Classification: Sunlight (energy) + CO2 (carbon)
Photoautotrophs
Classification: Sunlight (energy) + organic compound (carbon)
Photoheterotroph
Classification: Inorganic compounds (energy) + CO2 (carbon)
Chemolithoautotroph
Classification: Organic compounds (energy) + organic compounds (carbon)
Chemoorganoheterotroph
