Methods of sample collection
aspiration, swabbing, imprints
Aspiration used for
hollow organs (bladder) and external lesions (pustules)
Swabs are samples that should be processed _ and if delays expected use _
immediately; culturette
Data label requires:
O’s name, Clinic name, address & phone number, species, name, age, gender, number of animals affected or dead, duration of problem, major signs observed, tentative dx, organism suspected, any tx given, type of lab investigation required
Collect specimen
aseptically
Proper collection for dermatophytes
clean skin lesion to remove surface contamination and collect from periphery of lesion ( broken hair and dry scale)
Viruses often present in
nasal or pharyngeal secretions in early stage of URI
Specimens selected for indirect studies
serologic, hematologic, histologic, bacteriologic
Viral diseases often complicated by
pathogenic bacteria - secondary infections
Submission of small tissues pieces, fecal material or mucus
preserved in vials filled with 50% glycol
Submission of urine samples
5mL sent in sterile container
