Chapter 3.1 Biodiversity and the distribution of life Flashcards
Biodiversity in ecosystems is affected by
abiotic and biotic factors
Abiotic factors are
physical factors and inculde temperature and pH
Biotic factors are
related directly to living organisms and include factors such as grazing and predation
Humans can influence biodiversity in ecosystems through creation of
pollution, habitat destruction and over exploitation of species.
A biome is a
geographical region of the planet that is characterized by its climate and contains distinctive communities of plants (flora) and animals Fauna).
The global occurrence of particular biomes depends
on the physical characteristics of the area including the climatic factors of temperature and precipitation.
An ecosystem is the
community of organisms living in a habitat and their interactions with the non-living components of the system.
A niche is the
position occupied by an organism and the role it plays within its community.
