Chapter 2.3a Control and Communication: Nervous System Flashcards
The parts of the nervous system are the
brain, spinal cord, the nerves and the sense organs
The nervous system is made up of cells called
neurons
There are three basic types of neuro:
Sensory, relay and motor
The Central Nervous System (CNS) is made up of the
brain and the spinal cord
The brain is made up of the
cerebrum, cerebellum and medulla
The cerebrum is responsible for
conscious thoughts, reasoning, memory and emotions
The cerebellum controls
balance and co-ordination
The medulla controls involuntary functions such as
breathing, heart rate and peristalsis
The CNS processes information from the
Sense organs and coordinates responses
Sense organs contain receptor cells which generate
electrical impulses in response to stimuli
Electrical impulses pass from
sensory neurons to relay neurons within the CNS
Relay neurons within the CNS pass electrical impulses to
motor neurons
Motor neurons pass electrical impulses to
effectors which bring about a response
Reflex actions are very rapid since they involve only
a few neurons and do no require complex processing of information by the brain
Reflex actions help
protect the body from harm
