Chapter 2.6a The need for transport in plants Flashcards
Plants require water for transporting materials such as
minerals, for photosynthesis
Plants take up water by osmosis and minerals from the soil through the
root epidermis
The surface area of the root epidermis is increased by
root hair cells
Water and minerals taken up by roots are passed into tubes made up of dead
xylem cells
the cell walls of xylem cells contain a tough woody substance called
lignin
Water and minerals ass through the
plant stems to the leaves through xylem vessels
Water enters leaves in xylem vessels and passes into
spongy mesophyll cells by osmosis
Water evaporates into spaces in the
spongy mesophyll
Water vapour diffuses out of leaves through pores in the leaf epidermis called
stomata
The stomata open and close by movements of
guard cells found on either side of each pore
Loss of water though the leaves of a plant is called
transpiration
Sugars made by photosynthesis are transported around plants in
phloem tubes which are made from living cells
Phloem and xylem make up the
vascular tissue of flowering plants
