stress
- state of physiological and psychological arousal
- produced by internal or external stressors
- challenge an individuals resources or exceeding their ability to cope
Stressor
any person, situation or event that produces stress
-challenges our ability to cope
The stress Response can be
mild: motivating, thrilling, increased performance
Acute: suddenly producing a high level of arousal over a period of time
Chronic: high level arousal, long period of time, causes multiple responses
Eustress
positive psychological response to a stressor
- excited active and alert
- usually short term
Distress
negative psychological response to stressor
- anger anxiety tension
- long or short term
according to selye
all stressors produce a non-specific stress response
-regardless of good or bad stress
daily pressures
a type of stressor involving little problems of everyday
-irritants also called hassles

- a type of stressor in everyday life involving change
- that forces an individual to adapt to new circumstances
- immeditate consequences, long term adjustments
Acculturative stress
the stress people experience
-trying to adapt a new culture when living in it for a considerable period of time

- can occur when people relocate
- research findings indicate belonging in ethnic group increases the risk of developing stress
Major Stress
A type of stressor involving an event that is extraordinarily stressful or disturbing for almost everyone who experiences it
