chapter 2 Flashcards
population
The group about which we wish to draw conclusions is referred to as the
Sample:
a subsection or smaller group of research participants selected from the research population
sampling methods
- random sampling
- -every member has an equal chance of being selected
- stratified population
- -same propotions of gender as the entire population
- convience sampling
- -readily avaliable without making a sample represent the population
types of data
Qualitative data
-‘qualities’ or characteristics of what is being studied
Quantitative data
-numerical
information on the ‘quantity’ or amount of what is being studied
ethical considerations
- The role of the experimenter: The researcher must always act in a professional manner
- withdrawal rights
- informed consent
- deception
- debriefing
Participants’ rights (respect for participants):
Researchers must always maintain respect for the
participants.
-confidentiality
-voluntary participantion
confounding variable
A confounding variable is an “extra” variable that you didn’t account for. They can ruin an experiment and give you useless results
Extraneous variables
Extraneous variables are any variables that you are not intentionally studying in your experiment or test and you must control them
