How does technology help us?
We use technology to improve our knowledge, skills and experience to transform our environment. Technology is often tied to innovation and scientific understanding.
Define media.
A means of mass communication.
Define the globalization of media.
The ability to access lots of programming. A stronger connection to the global community over local communities. Promotes cultural homogenization.
Define the global village.
The global village symbolizes the growing connections across the globe. People are no longer citizens in the community but part of the world.
Define the digital divide.
The gap between access to the internet and those without the internet. 60% of the world’s population is offline. 6 billion are without highspeed and 4 billion are without internet. 2 billion don’t even have phones. Better education would allow more people to access these benefits.
What is ‘variety of content’.
1996, the internet allowed Al-Jazeera(an eastern news station) to be streamed in the west. Some people thought it would spread propaganda and others thought that diversity would be good. Al-Jazeera can’t be watched on cable without monitoring for hate speech.
What is media content?
It’s exposure and interaction with different groups of people that always leads to some level of assimilation. This small amount of assimilation can lead to more tolerance. Media can expose people to new experiences and people.
What is the Aboriginal People’s Television Network (APTN)?

What is media diversity?
Widespread access to media allows people worldwide to experience more diversity and enrichment in their lives. Media can spread concepts of social justice around the world giving people the motivation to fight for their rights; art such as music and films; a variety of ideologies, beliefs, and religions; and more acceptance for different people and environments. People who consume this media- those who are members of the global village- have the opportunity to explore life beyond their immediate community. Those who are not members of the global village are often left behind.
Define techno-isolation.
The idea is that we have such a diversity of access to media that we are not engaging with the world around us. Technology is isolating us from the real world. We are so connected to things happening in our world that we can’t find common ground with our peers- they’re likely consuming different media than us.
