Chapter 2:Identity & the Forces of Globalization Flashcards
What are the 4 forces of globalization?
Trade, transportation, communication, and media.
What are the 4 dimensions of globalization?
Economic, political, environmental and social.
What is the social dimension of globalization?
Refers to the impact of globalization on life and work of people, their families, and their societies. Concerns and issues are often raised about the impact of globalization on employment, working conditions, income and social protection. Social dimensions also encompass a way in which culture is transported between boarders.
What is the economic dimension of globalization?
The intensification of economic interconnectedness around the world. Economic globalization deals with the growing emergence of multinational or transnational corporations, international economic institutions like the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, as well as international trade.
What is the political dimension of globalization?
The intensification and expansion of political interrelationships around the world. Political globalization encompasses individual governments, social or political movements and organizations as well as international political organizations like the UN and their interactions across the world.
What is the environmental dimension of globalization?
The impact that forces of globalization have on the environment. Perceptions toward environmental globalization may differ depending on what part of the world you are in. Developed countries and non-government organizations are typically working towards environmental protection, while developing countries may see protectionist polices as a roadblock to their economic success.
Define individual identity.
Unique to who you are and encompasses your personal beliefs, tastes, opinions, preferences, and interests.
Define collective identity.
Values that identify you as a part of a group. When you think of your collective identity, you must think bigger than yourself and look to the groups that you belong to for a sense of identity.
What are the 2 polarizing thoughts of globalization impacts?
- The Negative force that erases individual and collective identity, gets rid of diversity and replaces the world with homogenized culture.
- The Positive force leads to a richness in individual and collective identity. It creates more tolerance and acceptance in the world.
Define trade.
Trade allows us to have greater access to a larger variety of goods, in greater quantities than ever before. This can mean your personality and tastes are enriched with options from different parts of the world. It can also mean that your traditional culture takes the back seat to new and exciting things. If you’re working on the production end of trade, you may be working in sweatshop conditions to mass-produce goods.
Define transportation.
Transportation allows for trade and travels to be possible- two important aspects of globalization. Without early transportation, the exchanges of goods and ideas to faraway places would not have been possible. But without early transportation, traditional languages and culture would be untouched.
Define extinct languages.
The language is no longer in use and no-one retains a sense of ethnic identity associated with the language.
Define doomed languages.
The language is no longer being learned as the mother tongue by children. A language is “doomed” when the youngest speakers are not children, but young adults. Once this generation ages and dies, the language does with them.
Define Communication technology.
Communication technology allows us to connect easily to different parts of the world through technology such as computers, phones and the internet. Communication technologies allow developing countries to become more easily involved in the worldwide economy. However, countries with poor access to technology may be left behind in this shift.
Define media.
Using communication technology to broadcast and gather information. Media includes the use of technologies such as computers, cell phones, and the internet to observe information and spread information. This force of globalization can be a great thing because it helps us expand our interest; however, this easy spread of information can be dangerous to the integrity of some cultures - this puts languages and traditions at risk.
