Chapter 3 (part 3) Flashcards
What are the two transport pathways?
- Bloodstream
- Lymphatic System
Bloodstream
- water-soluble nutrients and smaller products of digestion
- liver is the first stop
Lymphatic System
- larger fats and fat-soluble vitamins
- Chylomcirons- large fat and protein
Is the Vascular system closed or opened? and what acts as a pump for it?
- closed system of vessels
- heart acts as pump
How does blood leave the digestive system?
via the hepatic portal vein
out of small intestine to liver
The Liver and the points
- key position in nutrient transport
- 1st to receive nutrients absorbed from GI tract
- Prepares absorbed nutrients for use by body
- Major metabolic organ (involved in a lot of body processes)
- Defends by detoxifying harmful substances and excreting waste
The Lymphatic System Points
- one way route for fluid from tissue
- no pump
- much of lymph collects into thoracic duct behind heart which opens into subclavian vein
What does the lymphatic system bypass?
the liver at first
Factors that Influence GI functions
- immaturity
- aging
- illness
- nutrition
Benefits of Gastrointestinal Bacteria
-alleviate diarrhea
-constipation
Irritable Bowel Disease
-Ulcers
-Allergies
-Lactose Intolerance
_Protection Against Colon Cancer
Pro biotic
living microorganism found in foods, beneficial to health
prebiotics
food components not digested, used as food by GI bacteria
What role does GI bacteria play in Vitamin production?
- it does help produce
- B6,B12,Folate, and Vitamin K
Homeostasis
regulation of digestion, temperature, and blood pressure
What are the two systems that coordinate all digestive and absorptive processes?
- endocrine(hormonal)
- Nervous System(nerves)
