Chapter 3 (LC): Infancy And Toddlerhood Flashcards
Sensory system
The senses
Reflexes
Involuntary responses to simple stimuli
Motor skills
Ability to move or manipulate
Synapses
Neural connections in which information is transported.
Blooming
Period of overproduction of synapses.
Pruning
Period of reduction of synapses.
Immunization
Method of administering microorganisms, bacteria, or viruses that have been modified or killed to protect human from disease.
Cognition (infancy and toddlerhood)
The brains ability to process and store information and to solve problems.
Piaget’s stages of cognitive development (infancy and toddlerhood):
Sensorimotor stage (birth-2)
Look at only one frame at a time. When next picture appears on the screen infants focus on it and cannot go back to previous frame.
Piaget’s stages of cognitive development (infancy and toddlerhood):
Preoperational (2-7)
Preschool children and children in early grades can recall the sequence of pictures in the movie. They also develop symbolic functioning—the ability to use symbols to represent what is not present.
They do not necessarily understand what has happened or how it fits together.
Piaget’s stages of cognitive development (infancy and toddlerhood):
Concrete operations stage (7-11)
Not until the stage can children run the pictures in the movie backward and forward to better understand how they blend to form a specific meaning.
Piaget’s stages of cognitive development (infancy and toddlerhood):
Formal operations stage (11-beyond)
Children gain the capacity to apply logic to various situations and to use symbols to solve problems.
Object permanence
Ability to understand that an object or person exists even when they don’t see it.
Begins to occur (8-12 months)
Separation anxiety
Infant remembers previous separations.
Temperament
Individuals inmate disposition
