Chapter 3-cells Flashcards
Plasma membrane
Surrounds cell, controls what goes in and out of cell
Contains:
•Phospholipid (heads hydrophilic, tails hydrophobic)
•Cholesterol- strength
•Carbohydrate chains
•Protein- Chanels, receptors, and recognition
Nucleus
•Nuclear envelope- surrounds nucleus
•nuclear pores- regulate passage to nucleus
•chromatin- for cell division
•Nucleolus- forms components of ribosomes
“Protein producing structure”
Endoplasmic reticulum -rough ER
covered in ribosomes
Attached to nucleus
Creates proteins
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum
Contains enzymes that make lipids and carbohydrates
Has no ribosomes
Golgi apparatus
Transport vesicles bring protein from the rough ER to Golgi apparatus where they will be packed and sent off in secretory vesicles to be released from the cell
“Packing plant”
Cytoplasm
Holds stuff in place
Fluid in the cell
Centrioles
Just outside the nucleus
Perpendicular to each other
Play a role in cell division
Made of microtubules
Lysosomes
Part of Golgi apparatus
Use amino acids to keep cells clean
“Garbage disposal”
Mitochondria
“Powerhouse”
Two membranes-inner and outer
Christae filled with matrix
Convert enzymes into atp
Cytoskeleton
Framework of the cell Determines cell shape Strength, mobility Can be microvilli(gut), cilia(respiratory) flagella(sperm)
