state’s that people ideas and underlying emotions about illnesses, prevention, and treatments may influence health behaviors and decisions about changing (or not changing) health behaviors.
perceived susceptibility
people’s perceptions of how likely they are to develop an illness
Perceived seriousness
people’s perceptions of the long-term and short-term severity of the illness
benefits
how effective a person thinks a health behavior would be in preventing or treating an illness .
Barriers
how difficult implementing the new behavior would be and and the negative affects associated with doing so

Doing something because you want to do it

Feeling like you have to do something because of external forces

example: making it to the gym 4 times a week
outcome goal
example: losing 10 pounds

inactive, not even thinking about exercise

thinking about it within the next 6 months

doing it just not consistently

doing it consistently but not for 6+ months
