Chapter 2.9 Classification of Mixtures Flashcards
Heterogeneous Mixture
one of more visible boundaries between the components
ex. Rocks, milk, blood
Homogeneous Mixture (solution)
no visible boundaries because components are individual atoms, ion or molecules
ex. sugar + water = there molecules are uniformly intermingled in the mixture
Aqueous Solutions
solutions in water
How are mixtures different from compounds? (3)
- proportions of the components can vary
- the individual properties of the components are observable
- The components can be separated by physical means
OVERVIEW: Matter
- Anything with mass and volume
* Exists in three physical states: solids, liquid, gas
OVERVIEW: Mixtures
- two or more elements or compounds in variable proportions
* components retain their properties
OVERVIEW: Heterogeneous Mixtures
- Visible parts
* Differing regional composition
OVERVIEW: Homogeneous Mixtures
- NO visible parts
* same composition throughout
OVERVIEW: Substances
fixed composition throughout
OVERVIEW: Elements
- composed of one type of atom
- metal, nonmetal, or metalliod
- simplest type of matter that retains characteristic properties
- can be diatomic or polyatomic
Atomic Mass of an Element
the average of isotopic masses weighted by abundance
OVERVIEW: Compounds
- two or more elements combined in fixed parts by mass
- properties differ from those of components elements
- molecular mass is sum of atomic masses
