3.3 Writing and Balancing Chemical Equations Flashcards
Chemical Equations
shows the identities and quantities of substances in chemical or physical change
Steps for balancing an equation (4 steps)
- Translating the statement
- Balancing the atom
- Adjusting the coefficients
- Checking
- Specifying the States of Matter
Translating the Statement
substances present before the change (reactants) to the left of the yield arrow, and substances produced during the change (products) to the right of the arrow
Balancing the Atom
match the numbers of each type of atom on the left and right of the yield arrow
Adjusting the Coefficients
Usually the smallest whole number coefficients are preferred
Checking
after balancing and adjusting, check to make sure the equation is balanced
Specifying the States of Matter
final equation = add physical state of each substance and whether or not it dissolved in water
States of Matter
g for Gas
l for Liquid
s for Solid
aq for Aqueous Solution (dissolved in water)
