Chapter 1.1 Some Fundamental Definitions Flashcards
Chemistry
the study of matter and its properties, the changes that matter undergoes, and the energy associated with those changes
Matter
anything that has mass and volume
Composition
types & amounts of simpler substances that make it up
Substance
types of matter that has a fixed composition
Properties
Characteristics that give each substance its unique identity (physical & chemical)
Chemical Change (Chemical Reaction)
occurs when a substance is converted to a different substance
Solid
Fixed shape, non conforming, NOT defined by hardness or rigidity
Liquid
Varying shape that conforms to its container, but has an upper surface (cannot go higher than its volume), particles are close together but move randomly
Gas
varying shape, conforming and fills entire container
Energy
the ability to do work
Total Energy
the sum of kinetic & potential energy
- When energy is converted from one form to the other, it is conserved, not destroyed
- Situations of lower energy are more stable and more favored over situations of higher energy (less stable)
