Chapter 2.6 Elements: A first look at the Periodic Table Flashcards
Dimitri Mendeleev
Published the most successful periodic table of the elements
Organization of the periodic table (3)
- Each element has a box w/ atomic #, atomic symbol, & atomic mass; boxes lie in order of increasing atomic #
- Boxes are arranged into a grid of periods and groups
- The eight A groups contain the main - group elements, the ten B groups contain the transition elements
Periods
horizontal rows
*elements in a period have DIFFERENT chemical properties
Groups
vertical columns
*elements in a group have SIMILAR chemical properties
Metals Characteristics
- (3/4) of the elements
- lower left position of the table
- shiny solids at room temp (except mercury)
- Conduct heat and electricity well
- malleable and ductile
Position of metals on the periodic table?
lower left position of the table
Nonmetals
- small upper-right portion of the table
- gasses and dull/brittle solids at room temperature (except bromine)
- conduct head and electricity poorly
Position of nonmetals on the periodic table?
small upper-right portion of the table
metalliods (semimetals)
have properties of both metals and non metals
Group 1A
Alkali Metals (except Hydrogen) *highly reactive elements
Group 2A
Alkaline earth metals
*Highly reactive elements
Group 7A
Highly reactive nonmetals
Group 8A
Noble gasses: relatively un-reactive nonmetals
How to name other groups?
Other groups are named after the 1st element in the group
ex. 6A is named the Oxygen Family
