Chapter 2.1 Elements, Compounds, and Mixtures: an Atomic Overview Flashcards
1
Q
Three types of Matter
A
- Elements - Substance: Matter whose composition is fixed
- Compounds - Substance: Matter whose composition is fixed
- Mixtures - Not substance : Variable Composition
2
Q
Molecule
A
an independent structure of two or more atoms bound together
3
Q
Compounds
A
consists of two or more different elements that are bonded chemically
4
Q
Elements
A
simplest type of matter with unique physical and chemical properties
5
Q
Characteristics of Compounds
A
- All compounds = the elements are present in fixed parts by mass (fixed mass ratio) because each unit of the compound consists of a fixed number of atoms of each element
- Its properties are different from the properties of its component elements
- can be broken down into simpler substances by chemical changes
6
Q
Characteristics of Elements
A
- cannot be broken down into simpler type of matter
- each element is unique because the properties of its atoms are unique
- several elements occur in molecular form
7
Q
Mixtures
A
consists of two or more substances (elements and/or compounds) that are physically intermingled
8
Q
Characteristics of Mixtures
A
- Components can vary in their parts by mass (NOT FIXED)
- Retains many of the properties of its components ex. Saltwater
- can be separates into their components by physical means
