Chapter 27.2 Flashcards
What is the difference between weathering & erosion?
Weathering is the breakdown of materials. Erosion is the surface removal.
If the slope of a river decreases, what will happen to the river’s speed?
It will increase.
What are small streams called that flow into large rivers?
Tributaries
What is the boundary that separates drainage basins called?
drainage divide
What is it called when water flowers downhill under the influence of gravity & water?
A channel
How are young rivers shape?
V-shape
What river are wide with smooth & gentle slopes?
Mature rivers
What type of landform is created when rivers flood & drop their sediment load?
Flood plains
What is a fan shape-sediment deposit that forms at the mouth of a river?
Delta
What are distributaries?
Branching channels
What is formed at the mouth of a river or stream that enters dry land?
Alluvial Fans
What are the two types of glaciers?
Valley glaciers & continental glaciers.
Where do valley glaciers form?
High mountainous regions.
Where do continental glaciers form?
They form in colder climates & they occupy large land areas.
Where are the two continental glaciers located?
Greenland & Antarctica
What is a cirque?
Bowl shaped basin.
What is an arete?
Long sharpe ridgeline between valley glaciers.
What is a horn in a mountainous region?
Sharpened peaks
What shape of a valley do valley glaciers form?
U-shaped valleys
What are tributary glaciers?
Small glaciers that feed into large glaciers.
What type of valleys do tributary glaciers form?
Hanging valleys
Which side does erosion on a sand dune occur on?
Windward
Which side does deposition on a sand dune occur on?
Leeward
What is deflation?
The removal of small particles by wind, leaving heavier particles behind.
What is desert pavement?
When small particles are removed, & the remaining surface is left.
The shape & sizes of landforms depends on…?
Wind speed, amount of time the wind blows, & sediment supply.
What are 3 landforms created by wave erosion?
Coastal cliffs, sea stacks, & sea arches.
What are 2 examples of deposition?
Sand bars, & sand spits
What are sand bars?
Landforms that are parallel to the shoreline.
What are sand spits?
Are like sandbars, but they curve back toward land. (hook shape)
What are some things that can cause mass wasting?
Snow, heavy rains, earthquakes, or human activity.
