chapter 26 ebook Flashcards
Isometric exercises
used to promote strength and muscle tone
ex: quadriceps setting and gluteal setting
Quadriceps setting
client alternately tenses and relaxes the quadriceps muscles
exercising the quadriceps muscles enables client to stand and support their body weight
Gluteal setting
contraction and relaxation of the gluteal muscles to improve their strength and tone
muscles in the buttocks aid in extending abducting and rotating the leg which are essential to walking
upper arm strengthing
clients who use a walker, cane or crutches need upper arm strength
ex: flexion and extension of the arms and wrists, raising and lowering weights with the hands, squeezing a ball or spring grip and performing modified pushings
must perform pushups 3 or 4 times a day to be effective
Dangling
helps normalize blood pressure
Tilt table
device that raises the client from a supine to a standing position
elastic stockings applied before the lift to compress vein walls
tilted 15 to 30 degrees until vertical
A walking belt (gait belt)
if client loses balance, the nurse can support him or her to prevent injuries
Canes
for a client who has weakness on one side of the body
Cane with half circle-minimal support
A T-handle cane-more stability
A quad cane- the most stability
Should be parallel with the clients hip, elbow flexion of 30 degrees
Walker
most stable form of ambulatory aid
commonly used by clients after bed rest or hip surgery
