Chapter 21 Flashcards
What is the primary function of the Lymphatic system
to return interstitial fluid, leaked plasma proteins, and dietary lipids and lipid-soluble vitamines back to the blood (3L/day) -as well protects against invading microorganisms though immune responses
What are the two semi independent parts of the lymphatic system
1) Lymphatic vessels/lymphatics : a one-way meandering network in which lymph flows towards the heart
2) Lymph: fluid containing white blood cells that bathes the tissues and drains through the lymphatic system into the blood stream
What do lymph vessels include
1) microscopic, permeable, blind-ended lymphatic capillaries
2) lymphatic collecting vessels
3) trunks and ducts
- lymphoid tissues and organs scattered throughout the body
