Q

what are the three ways to classify sensory receptors

Q

what are the five classifications by stimulus types

A
  1. mechanoreceptors (touch, pressure, vibration, and strect)
  2. thermoreceptors (temperature)
  3. photoreceptors (light)
  4. chemoreceptors (chemicals, smell, taste, changes in blood chemistry)
  5. nociceptors (damaging stimuli, searing heat, extrememe cold, excessive pressure)

Q

classification by location (3 types)

A
  1. exteroceptors: receptors at or near body surface, touch pressure, pain, vision, hearing smell, taste
  2. Interoceptors: receptors within body, viscera, blood vessels, chemicals, temperature, stretch, hunger ect.
  3. Proprioceptors: receptors within body skeletal muscle, joints, tendons, ligaments, measure movement by amount of stretch

Q

classification based on structure complex: 2 types

A
  1. complex: sense organs, eyes ears ect.
  2. simple: nerve endings
    a. non-encapsulated ( 3-types) - ubiquitous for temperature and light touch
    b. encapsulated ( 5 types) -sensory neuron terminals enclosed in capsule all mechanoreceptors; vary greatly in size, shape and distribution
