Chapter 13 PNS & reflex avtivity Flashcards
1
Q
what are the three ways to classify sensory receptors
A
1: type of stimulus
2. location in the body
3. structural complexity of receptor
2
Q
what are the five classifications by stimulus types
A
- mechanoreceptors (touch, pressure, vibration, and strect)
- thermoreceptors (temperature)
- photoreceptors (light)
- chemoreceptors (chemicals, smell, taste, changes in blood chemistry)
- nociceptors (damaging stimuli, searing heat, extrememe cold, excessive pressure)
3
Q
classification by location (3 types)
A
- exteroceptors: receptors at or near body surface, touch pressure, pain, vision, hearing smell, taste
- Interoceptors: receptors within body, viscera, blood vessels, chemicals, temperature, stretch, hunger ect.
- Proprioceptors: receptors within body skeletal muscle, joints, tendons, ligaments, measure movement by amount of stretch
4
Q
classification based on structure complex: 2 types
A
- complex: sense organs, eyes ears ect.
- simple: nerve endings
a. non-encapsulated ( 3-types) - ubiquitous for temperature and light touch
b. encapsulated ( 5 types) -sensory neuron terminals enclosed in capsule all mechanoreceptors; vary greatly in size, shape and distribution
