Chapter 20 - Patterns of Inheritance Flashcards
State two reasons why it might be inappropriate to use hardy Weinberg principle to estimate allele frequencies at small numbers
Population may not sufficiently be large
Population may not be randomly mating
State one way in which genetic diversity can be measured
Genetic polymorphism
Explain why a genetic bottleneck can lead to low genetic diversity
Genetic bottleneck is when there is a larger change in population size and many alleles are lost, therefore currently there are fewer survivors
Explain allopatric speciation
Allopatric speciation, different selection pressure, random mutation , beneficial alleles are passed on and this results in directional selection
State 3 other conditions that must be present in order for speciation to occur
Time
Genetic Diversity
Natural Selection
How can one allele (B) inhibit expression of another allele (A)
Allele B produces repressor protein. The protein then binds to promoter of A. B stops transcription and translation of allele A
Product B inhibits the enzyme encoded by A
