Chapter 2 The Nervous System Flashcards
What does the nervous system do
It cause a reaction to a stimulus outside the body
Name the parts of the nervous system in order
Stimulus,receptor,sensory Neurone, CNS,motor neurone,effector,response
What happens when a stimulus is detected eg a cut
The receptors detect this and convert the information to electrical impulses and send it to the brain ( CNS) using the sensory neurones
The CNS then coordinates a response , the impulses from the response are sent along the motor neurone to the effector then the response is triggered to pull the cut away from danger
What are neurones
Neurones are nerve cells whihch have extensions to other neurones using dendrites and dendrons to carry these impulses to the cell and
Axons carrying them away from the body into the next cell
Why are some axons covered in a myline sheath
To act as an electrical insulator speeding up the electrical impulse
What is the structure of the sensory neurone
One long dendrimer carries nerve impulses from receptor cells to the cell body in the middle of the neurone. One short axon carries nerve impulses away from the cell body
What is the structure of a motor neurone
Many short dendrites carry never impulese from the CNS to the cell body
One long axon carries nerve impulses from the cell body to the effector cells
What is the structure of a really neurone
Many short dendrites carry nerve impulses from the sensory neurones to the cell body
An axon carries nerve impulses from the cell. Body to motor neurones
