movement to reform church, launched in Germany by Martin Luther. Questioned authority of pope, sought to end selling of indulgences and wanted bible translation. CONTEXT- england 1530’s, Henry broke with roman catholic church. 1500’s-england used to be spains ally but now were competting aganist their growing catholic empire)
protestant reformation
idea of nation and state. Strong pride in ones country. unifies them.

oldest son inherits all farm propert/land. CONTEXT- early exploration/settlement of Americas
primogeniture
short term partner ship between multiple investors to fund commercial enterprise. such arrangements funded England’s early colonial adventures
joint stock company
Lord De la Warr comes in 1610 declaring war against Natives. Destroyed villages. 1st war ended when Pocahontas married John Rolfe. 2nd war in 1644 when Natives tried to win over Virginians. They were defeated. (CONTEXT- English landed in 1607 in James river aera and called Natives Powhatans.)
1st/2nd Powhatan war
rep parliamentary assembly created to govern Virgina, establishing a precedent for government in English colonies.
house of burgesses
1699, passed in Maryland, promised toleration to all Christians but death of Jews/Atheists. Ensured Maryland would attract catholic migrants. (CONTEXT- Maryland founded by Lord Baltimore)
Act of Toleration
1661, first formal statue governing the treatment of slaves. Denied slaves basic rights and gave control to masters. (CONTEXT- English was colonizing west indies. Sugar lords took over Tabacco in the 17th century. They got African slaves who outnumbered the white settlers.)
Barbados slave code
late 1500’s, bound 5 tribes (Mohawks, Oneidas, Onondagas, Cayuga’s, Senacs) in Mohawk valley of what is now modern day NY

ruled England from 1558-1603. Last monarch of the tudor dynasty in England

(1566-1625) First Stuart king of England. Allowed Virgina company of London to establish colony in 1606. Advocate of royal absolutism led to problems with parliament. Ordered new translation of bible (king James version)
