Chapter 2 Peripherals and Connectors Flashcards
1.5, 2.1, 2.2
Data in Transit
digital data that is actively moving between two different computer systems, applications, or locations.
(Measured in bits/per second) or bps; Kbps, Mbps, Gbps, Tbps
Throughput
the amount of data that can be sent through a cable or space. There are about 1000 Bits in a kilobit and so forth
- Measured in bits/per second (bps)
- Kbps, Mbps, Gbps, Tbps
Interface
a physical connection across which two or more separate components of a computer system exchange information
- Network Interface
- Peripheral Device Interface
Network Interface
allow communication from one computing device to another computing device
- connection from a laptop to a smartphone
Peripheral Device Interface
allow communication from a computing device to a peripheral device
- a connection from a laptop to a printer
Graphical Device Interface
allow you to transmit visual data for display purposed from a computing device to a graphical device
- interface that created a connection from a desktop PC to a computer monitor
Wired Interfaces
require a cable to extend between two devices
- terminate with a connector and these connectors will plug into a port on the device
Connector
the side of a connection with a pin or pins
Port
side of a connection with a hole or holes
Wireless
uses radio frequencies, or RF for short
- does not mean a physical connection does not exist
Radio Frequencies
an electromagnetic signal used to connect computing devices without wires
- electromagnetic connection is still a physical property allowing transmitting of information making it a physical interface
Electrical Signal
when electricity is used to convey information. There are two main types of signals used in electronics: analog and digital signals
- analog and digital signals
Analog Signal
a signal that produces a smooth and continuous curve where binary 1s and 0s are represented by the highs and lows of the signal voltage
- produces smooth and continuous upward and downward curves
Digital Signal
a signal that represents data as a sequence of discrete values where binary 1s and 0s are represented by the presence or non-presence of voltage
- allows for higher data throughputs
- gradually increases and decreases in voltage are replaced with discrete values
Telephone Connector (RJ-11)
a wired networking interface standard used for telephone communications and dial-up internet
- 6 pin connector
- commonly found in house phones and modems
Ethernet Connector (RJ-45)
a wired networking interface standard used in Ethernet networking to terminate ethernet CAT cables
- 8 pin connector
- commonly found in routers, switches NICs
Category, or CAT cables
a type of twisted pair cabling
- 8 individuals wires
- grouped into 4 pairs
- each pair is color coded and then twisted together
