Electrical Signal
when electricity is used to convey information. There are two main types of signals used in electronics: analog and digital signals
- analog and digital signals
Analog Signal
a signal that produces a smooth and continuous curve where binary 1s and 0s are represented by the highs and lows of the signal voltage
- produces smooth and continuous upward and downward curves
Digital Signal
a signal that represents data as a sequence of discrete values where binary 1s and 0s are represented by the presence or non-presence of voltage
- allows for higher data throughputs
- gradually increases and decreases in voltage are replaced with discrete values
Telephone Connector (RJ-11)
a wired networking interface standard used for telephone communications and dial-up internet
- 6 pin connector
- commonly found in house phones and modems
Ethernet Connector (RJ-45)
a wired networking interface standard used in Ethernet networking to terminate ethernet CAT cables
- 8 pin connector
- commonly found in routers, switches NICs
Category, or CAT cables
a type of twisted pair cabling
- 8 individuals wires
- grouped into 4 pairs
- each pair is color coded and then twisted together
Near Field Communication (NFC)
a wireless networking interface standard that uses radio frequencies to share data over a short distance of a few centimeters
- Distance limitation of 18cm (6in)
- Maximum throughput of 424 Kbps
- contactless payment processing (Apple pay)
Bluetooth
a wireless networking interface and peripheral device interface standard that uses radio frequencies to share data over a short distance of a few meters
- Distance limitation of 10m (30ft)
- Maximum throughput of 24 Mbps
- wireless networking device and peripheral device interface
Universal Serial Bus (USB)
a wired peripheral device interface standard
- USB Type A: most common connector seen mostly on flash drives
- USB Type B: used to connect printers
- Micro USB: used to charge older mobile devices
- Mini USB: used to charge more recent devices
- USB Type C: used with the most current device. Is bi-directional
Plug-and-play
revolutionize the way we connect and use peripheral devices by eliminating the need for complex manual software installations
Hot-swappable
plug or unplug USB devices from your computer while it is powered on, without needing to restart or shut down the system, providing convenient and seamless connectivity
Data Transmission and Power
enables the simultaneous transfer of data and power between devices
FireWire
a wired peripheral device interface standard
- plug-and-play
- hot-swappable
- Data Transmission and Power
- 6 pin and 4 pin connectors options
Thunderbolt
a wired networking interface, peripheral device interface and graphical device interface standard all in one. Uses video, sound, internet connectivity, power and data overall
- Transmits visual data for display purposes
- Supports throughputs up to 40Gbps
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)
a wireless peripheral device interface technology used to communicate and interact with RFID-enabled peripherals
- Readers/Scanners and Tags
- Passive and Active
Video Graphics Array (VGA)
- Released in 1986
- has a 15-pin connector
- provides video only
- analog signals only
- separated and individually transmitted colors as Red, Green, and Blue (RGB) values
Digital Video Interface (DVI)
has high picture quality but cannot transfer sound. Three types: DVI-D (Digital), DVI-A (Analog), DVI-I (digital & analog
- released in 1999
- analog and digital signals
- connectors can have up to 29-pin
- provides video only
High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI)
- released in 2002
- had a 19-pin connector
