Chapter 2 (engels): Research ideas and hypotheses Flashcards
1
Q
Literature search
A
To find an idea for study that gives a general statement ab the relation between two variables
2
Q
Characteristics of a good hypothesis
A
Logical, testable, refutable and positive
3
Q
A logical hypothesis
A
- A logical conclusion(=Hypothesis) of a logical argument
- Logical argument provides a rationale or justification for hypothesis and establishes a connection between your research and the research results that have been obtained by others
4
Q
A Testable hypothesis
A
- A hypothesis where all the variables can, events, and individuals can be testes and observed
- Possible to measure everything involved
- Must be real situations, real events, and real individuals
5
Q
A refutable hypothesis
A
- Refutable= possible to obtain research results that are contrary to the hypothesis
- science research must be appropriate for objective and subjective demonstration
- ex. If people could fly, there would be fewer depression cases -> can’t be proven!!!
6
Q
a positive hypothesis
A
- Must be a positive statement about an existence of something (relationship, treatment, …)
- Prediction that denies existence is untestable
- Based on scientific process used to test prediction
- Hypothesis that denies existence cannot be tested in a research study -> not a good foundation
7
Q
Using a hypothesis to create a research study
A
- Transform general hypothesis into a specific research study
- Hypothesis converted in a research prediction that can be verified or refuted
- General hypothesis can be transformed in several different research studies
–> You can use a general hypothesis from an already existing study and develop own study
