The case of the 2020 Nova Scotia attacks
Gabriel Wortman, dressed as an RCMP officer and driving a decommissioned RCMP cruiser, carried out multiple shootings and set fires in 16 different locations.
In the deadliest mass shooting in Canadian history, 22 people died and several others were injured before being shot and killed by police. Took place on April 18th and 19th.
critical thinking
the process of evaluating information, claims, or arguments through careful questioning and the application of reason.
exceptional white male syndrome
mainstream media portrayals of white men as exceptional outliers who do horrific things, but are actually nice people who suddenly snapped.
problem frame
it focuses on the existence of something extraordinary and the “bad” that affects many people, and it identifies unambiguous solutions that can be implemented in the future.
moral panic
phenomena - socially constructed by the media and moral entrepreneurs; in which certain people or groups are labeled or stigmatized as the cause of a perceived social problem, resulting in widespread public alarm.
moral entrepreneur
a person, group, or organization that takes the lead in identifying certain behaviors as deviant and in need of legal sanctions.
folk devils
originating in images from folklore, this refers to people or groups presented in media as deviant outsiders and the cause of social problems.
stereotyping
the simplistic and often belittling representation of a person or group using exaggerations of traits that the larger group supposedly possesses.
discourses
forms of language, representation, and practices; how meaning is created and shared. take place within specific cultural and historical contexts.
ideal victim
a person or category of individuals who, when hit by crime, most readily are given the complete and legitimate status of being a victim.
