Chapter 2 Flashcards
What is a molecule?
Two or more atoms bound together
What is a compound?
Two or more different atoms bound together
What is matter?
Anything that takes up space and has mass
What is an element?
A substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances
What is CHNOPS?
Carbon Oxygen Nitrogen Oxygen Phosphorous Sulphur (most used elements in molecular biology)
How many degrees are there between hydrogen bonds in water?
104.5
Why does water have such a high heat capacity?
Hydrogen bonds allow it to absorb a lot of heat without much change in temperature
Why does water have such a high heat of vaporization?
Hydrogen bonds must be broken before water boils and water molecules vaporize
Why are water molecules cohesive?
Can flow freely while clinging to each other
Why is ice less dense than water?
The water molecules come closer together
What is acidosis?
It occurs when pH drops below 7
What is alkalosis?
It occurs when pH rises above 7.8
What do organic molecules always contain?
Carbon and Hydrogen
What is a functional group?
It is a group of atoms that always behaves in a particular way
What is a monomer?
It is an organic molecule that exists individually or can combine to make a polymer
