Areola
darkened area surrounding nipple
Coopers ligament
suspensory ligaments: fibrous bands that extend from the inner breast surface to the chest wall muscles
Fibroadenoma
benign breast mass
Gynecomastia
excessive breast development in the male
Inframammary ridge
a firm, transverse ridge of compressed tissue in the lower quadrants of the breast, especially noticeable when palpating large breasts
Inverted
nipples that are depressed or invaginated
Mastitis
inflammation of the breast; often associated with breastfeeding
Menarche
onset of menstration; usually occurs during stage 3-4 of breast development
Montgomery’s glands
small, elevated sebaceous glands in the areola that secrete protective lipid during lactation; also called tubercles of Montgomery
Retraction
dimpling or puckering on the skin; usually results from fibrosis in the breast tissue, and may be related to a growing neoplasm
Tail of Spence
superior lateral corner of breast tissue that extends into the axilla
