Chapter 11 Terms Flashcards
Acute Pain
pain that is short-term and self-limiting, follows a predictable trajectory and dissipates after an injury heals
Cutaneous Pain
pain originating from skin surfaces or subcutaneous structures
Modulation
last phase of nociception, when pain message is inhibited
Neuropathic Pain
abnormal processing of pain message; burning, shooting in nature
Nociception
process whereby noxious stimuli are perceived as pain
Nociceptors
specialized nerve endings that detect painful sensations
Pain
an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage. Pain is always subjective
Perception
conscious awareness of a painful sensation
Persistent (chronic) Pain
pain that has been present for six months or longer than the time of expected tissue healing
Referred Pain
pain felt at a particular site but that originates from another location
Somatic Pain
originating from muscle, bone, joints, tendons, or blood vessels
Transduction
the first phase of nociception whereby the painful stimulus is changed into an action potential
Transmission
the second phase of nociception whereby the pain impulse moves from the spinal cord to the brain
Visceral Pain
originating from internal organs such as the gallbladder or stomach
Phases of Nociception
- Transduction - painful stimulus is changed into AP
- Transmission - AP moves from spinal cord to brain
- Perception - conscious awareness of the pain
- Modulation - pain message is inhibited
